Common Terms Used in Metal Roofing
- Gauge
- The term gauge indicates the standard thickness of sheet metal for a specific material
- As the gauge number increases, the material thickness decreases
- Coating
- Finished Material Used on the Surface of the Roofing Metal.
Common Materials:
- 26 & 24 Gauge Grade 50 Structural Steel Galvalume
- Galvalume (Aluminum & Zinc coated Steel)
- Galvalume steel is made up of two types of protective mechanisms:
- Zinc – Gives a sacrificial galvanic protection from corrosion
- Aluminum- Forms an oxide protective layer that serves as barrier protection
- Used in Residential and Light Commercial roofing projects
- Most common material used in metal roofing
- Offers superior corrosion resistance over galvanized at a comparable price
- 29 Gauge, G90 Galvanized Steel/Galvalume Steel
- Zinc – Gives a sacrificial galvanic protection from corrosion
- Coating weight = Amount of Zinc on the top & bottom of the steel per square foot
- So, G90 Galvanized steel has 0.9 ounces of zinc per square foot
- G60 Galvanized steel has 0.6 ounces of zinc per square foot
- 29 Gauge, Galvalume Steel
- Galvalume (Aluminum & Zinc coated Steel)

- .032″ Aluminum
- Used in higher corrosive environments (salt and pollutants), such as coastal and industrial areas
- 16 oz. Copper
- Used in Light Commercial and high-end Residential roofing projects where aesthetics are the primary objective
